Our story

Born on the Matakana Coast

We are the surf school for this stretch of coast, from the beaches around Omaha to the Goat Island Marine Reserve. Small groups, qualified coaches, and a real love of the sea.

A surf school with its feet in the sand

Saltwater Eco grew out of a simple idea: that the best place to learn to surf is in your own backyard, with people who know it intimately.

This coast is ours. We know which beach is working, which wave suits a first timer, and where the water is at its kindest for a nervous beginner. That local knowledge is the difference between a frustrating first surf and the one that hooks you for life.

From a child catching their first wave to a whole school spending the day on the water, we are here to make the ocean feel welcoming, safe and endlessly worth it.

Why Eco

The clue is in our name

We share this coast with the Goat Island Marine Reserve, one of the first places in the country set aside for the sea to simply be itself. Surfing is how most people meet us, but caring for the water they fall in love with is what we are really about. It shows up in the small things: how we tread the dunes, how we talk about the ocean, and the respect we pass on to every grom and group we teach.
The people

Coaches who know this coast

Our coaches are qualified and experienced, and just as importantly, they are good with people, whether that is a shy six-year-old or a carload of teenagers.
